Rosatom awards contract to build a BREST-OD-300 fast reactor (Russia)

Russian construction company TITAN-2 obtained a RUB26.3bn (US$413,3m) contract from a subsidiary of Rosatom, Siberian Chemical Plant, to take part in the construction of a 300 MW BREST-OD-300 lead-cooled fast neutron reactor in Seversk (Tomsk region, West Siberia). TITAN-2 will build the reactor hall, the turbine hall and related infrastructure facilities of the power plant. Commissioning is expected by the end of 2026. The construction has been approved in 2016.

The project, which includes the construction a Pilot Demonstration Energy Complex with a lead-cooled BREST-OD-300 fast neutron reactor, aims at creating a new technology platform for the industry with closed nuclear fuel cycle, as well as tackling the issues of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. In addition to the power plant, the complex will include an on-site closed nuclear fuel cycle with a factory for fabrication/re-fabrication of mixed nitride uranium-plutonium nuclear fuel, as well as a spent fuel reprocessing facility.
