Romania's power generation increased by 5.3% in 2021

Electricity production in Romania increased by 5.3% in 2021 to 59 TWh, with 38% of thermal, 29% of hydro, 19% of nuclear, 11% of wind and 3% of solar, while electricity imports rose by 6.7% to 8.1 TWh, according to the country's National Institute of Statistics. Electricity consumption increased by 4.2% to 55.7 TWh and exports surged by 23% to 5.9 TWh. Romania's primary energy supply increased by 6.8% in 2021 to 33.8 Mtoe, with 18.5 Mtoe of primary energy production (+1.7%, pushed by a 16.5% growth in coal production) and 15.3 Mtoe of primary energy imports (+13.5%, spurred by gas imports). Oil, including imports of petroleum products, accounted for 41% of Romania's primary energy mix in 2021 (2.9% decrease in domestic production offset by a 19% increase in oil product imports), followed by natural gas (30%), primary electricity (17%) and coal (11%).
