Romanian 400 kV Reşiţa-Pancevo power line enters service with Serbia

Transelectrica, the operator of the national energy transmission system in Romania, has inaugurated the 400 kV Reşiţa-Pancevo high-voltage line between Romania and Serbia. The new interconnector has become the 11th 400 kV interconnection line between Romania and neighbouring countries and is expected to enter full commercial operation once the Reşiţa Electric Transformer Station is built by the end of 1Q 2025. The 400 kV Reşiţa-Pancevo OHL has a total length of 131 km, of which 63 km are on Romanian territory. The power line makes a significant contribution to the consolidation of the National Power System and the network in South-Eastern Europe by increasing security in electricity supply, improving energy exchanges at the regional level, reducing cross-border congestion at the border between the Romanian and Serbian power systems.

At the end of 2023, Romania was a net power exporter with 3 TWh (10 TWh imports and 13 TWh exports); exports mainly went to Bulgaria (43%), Moldova (28%), and Serbia (14%), while imports mainly came from Hungary (31%), Bulgaria (25%), and Ukraine (24%). In total, Romania's interconnection capacity with Serbia is estimated at 1 GW (500 MW in 2023).
