The Romanian state-owned nuclear company Nuclearelectrica and Nova Power & Gas (NPG) have taken the final investment decision (FID) for a 462 MW small modular reactors (SMR) project in Doicești (Romania). Nuclearelectrica holds a 50% stake in the project company RoPower Nuclear, together with the Romanian company NPG.
The SMR project, to be built on the site of the former 600 MW coal-fired Doicești power plant, is expected to comprise 6 small nuclear reactors of 77 MW supplied by the company NuScale (United States).
It is expected to require an investment of USD6-7bn. The government said it will fund only one of the units, and the remaining 5 only after it is proven that the first one is functioning properly. The country will sort out of the plant can be financed, and this phase is expected to last 5-6 years.
Nuclear accounted for about a fifth of Romania’s power mix in 2024 (21%). The Romania has two 650 MW nuclear reactors in operation on the site of Cernavoda using Canadian heavy water technology (Candu); they were commissioned in 1996 and 2007, respectively.
