Romania starts partner selection for Cernavoda nuclear project

China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) has filed a non-binding bid to partner Romanian state-owned nuclear power producer Nuclearelectrica in building two nuclear reactors at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant (Cernavoda-3 and 4). The Chinese firm was the only prospective investor to file an offer by the 8 September 2014 deadline. The firm has until 24 September 2014 to file a binding bid and a price offer for a majority stake in the joint company that will build the two reactors.

State-owned nuclear power generation company Nuclearelectrica had launched a competitive selection procedure of a private investor for the construction of two 720 MW CANDU reactors at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant in end-August 2014. Nuclearelectrica would have a 49% stake in the project and would sell off 51% in the future company to a private investor. Total investment in the plant is estimated at €6.5bn.
