The Ministry of Energy of Romania expects around 2,500 MW of new power capacity to be commissioned in the country in 2025, after 1,200 MW put into operation in 2024. The largest power projects due to start operations during the year are the 1 GW Mintia gas-fired power plant (expected at the end of 2025), the 430 MW Iernut gas-fired power plant, an 80 MW gas-fired CHP plant in Navodari and the 30 MW Răstolița hydropower plant. In addition, 1,200 to 1,500 MW of renewable sources and other modern capacities financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) should be added by private developers in 2025, and the battery storage capacity should be doubled to 400-500 MWh. Over 2.5 GW of new power capacity should then be commissioned by the end of 2025, including at least 600 MW of baseload production.
Meanwhile, Romania will continue the exploitation of the Neptun Deep and Caragele gas fields, the development of the nuclear programme and of solar PV and batteries.
