Romania and Bulgaria agree to build two hydropower plants on the Danube

Romania and Bulgaria have reach an agreement concerning the construction of two hydropower plants on the Danube, which will be jointly operated by the two countries. The projects, which are expected to become operational within the next five to six years, would be developed by the Romanian state-owned hydropower utility Hidroelectrica.

Located on the Danube between Turnu Măgurele in Romania and Nikopol in Bulgaria, the first project, which would have a capacity of 840 MW, has already completed the feasibility studies stage. It will produce 4.4 TWh/year. The second project, which is expected to be located between near Silistra on the Bulgarian side and Kalarash on the Romanian side is less advanced, with feasibility studies only starting.
