Rhode Island Energy, the US state’s utility company, has issued a request for proposal (RFP) for 600 MW to 1 GW of offshore wind capacity in the US state. The project proposals by bidders will be due to Rhode Island Energy on 1 February 2023. The announcement follows a 30-day public feedback comment period launched in September. In July 2022, the Governor of Rhode Island signed into law clean energy legislation that seeks to expand Rhode Island’s offshore wind energy resource.
The addition of these offshore wind capacities will have the potential to meet at least 30% of Rhode Island’s estimated 2030 electricity demand. Two other offshore wind projects are already being developed in the state: the 30 MW Block Island wind farm and the 400 MW Revolution wind project, developed by Ørsted. Rhode Island is targeting 100% of power generation from renewables by 2033.
These targets will also contribute to the current US administration’s objectives to tackle climate change and further the energy transition. At the federal level, the United States aims for 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2021).
