The US state of Rhode Island has opened a request for proposals (RFP) for offshore wind procurement to public feedback, targeting between 600 MW and 1 GW of new offshore wind capacity off the state’s coast. This announcement launches a 30-day comment period that will last until 7 October 2022. Utility Rhode Island Energy is administering the RFP process and will issue the procurement exercise to the market on 15 October 2022 at the latest.
The addition of these offshore wind capacities will have the potential to meet at least 30% of Rhode Island’s estimated 2030 electricity demand. Two other offshore wind projects are already being developed in the state: the 30 MW Block Island wind farm and the 400 MW Revolution wind project, developed by Ørsted. Rhode Island is targeting 100% of power generation from renewables by 2033.
These targets will also contribute to the current US administration’s objectives to tackle climate change and further the energy transition, as the United States have confirmed they target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 (only 42 MW in 2021).
