Restart Energy signs connection deal for a 500 MW solar PV project in Romania

Agrovoltaics, a subsidiary of the Romanian company Restart Energy, has signed a RON56m (€11.3m) connection agreement with Romania’s power transmission grid operator Transelectrica for the development of a 500 MW solar PV project to be built in Şimand, Arad county (western Romania).

With this agreement, Restart Energy now expects construction to begin in the second quarter of 2025 and the project to be completed by the end of 2026. The solar park, which will become Romania’s second largest, is expected to produce 800 GWh/year of electricity, enough to supply around 200,000 Romanian households and to offset emissions by about 400 ktCO2/year. The project will be financed by the US Exim Bank through the American fund Interlink Capital Strategies.

As of end 2023, solar represented 10% of Romania’s installed capacity with 1.9 GW, but only about 3% of its power generation with 1.86 TWh. The country currently has around 5 GW of solar capacity under development.
