Renexia plans to develop a 2.8 GW offshore wind farm off Sicily (Italy)

The Italian renewable company Renexia, subsidiary of Toto Holding, is planning to develop a 2.8 GW offshore floating wind farm that will be located in the Strait of Sicily, southern Italy. The Med Wind project is one of the biggest renewable energy projects planned for the Mediterranean Sea, with 190 floating turbines expected to be deployed.

Fugro, a Dutch engineering company, was awarded a survey contract by Renexia and will produce detailed marine geophysical and environmental surveys in order to determine the feasibility of the project. Once Fugro has acquired the necessary Geo-data in the site’s water depths of 300 m to 900 m, the results of the analysis will be used to advise on risk mitigation and identify a safe route for installation of the two export cables. These results will also feed into the final integrated environmental impact assessment (EIA) application to Italy’s Ministry of Energy Transition.

As of end-2021, Italy did not yet possess any operational offshore wind capacity but had more than 11 GW of onshore wind (9% of the country’s installed capacity and 7% of its power generation with 21 TWh).
