Renewables represented 25% of the US’ s power mix in 2024

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released a report on the monthly electricity statistic with data through 31 December 2024. Throughout 2024, power generation increased by 2.9%, spurred by a 9% growth in renewable power generation, i.e. three times the growth of natural gas (3.3%). Renewables (wind, solar, hydro, biomass and geothermal) provided over 25% of the total US electricity production in 2024 (compared to 24% in 2023).

Solar represented the country’s fastest growing technology, providing almost a quarter of the renewable production, and almost 7% of the US’ electrical generation. Wind remained as the largest source of electrical generation among renewable energy sources, accounting for 10.5% of the country’s total and rising by 7.7%, surpassing hydropower generation by 87.2%. With this, renewables increased their position as the second largest source of energy in the US’s power mix, behind natural gas (43%) and before nuclear (18%) and coal (15%).
