The US Energy Administration (EIA) forecasts that the share of renewables in the country’s power generation mix should reach 22% in 2022 and 24% in 2023 as more generating capacity from wind and solar come online and other generation sources, such as coal and nuclear, are retired. In 2021, renewables accounted for 20.7% of US power mix, with 8.7% of wind, 6.5% of hydro, 3.5% of solar, 1.5% of biomass and 0.5% of geothermal.
The country’s capacity amounts to 1 269 GW (end of 2021). It is dominated by gas (44%) and coal (18%). Renewables account for 28% and nuclear for 8% of the total capacity. Wind capacity has increased by an average of 19%/year since 2005 and reached 133 GW at the end of 2021, exclusively onshore. The solar capacity has developed at an extremely high pace since 2010, reaching around 98 GW, increasing by 18% in 2021 alone.
