According to preliminary data from the Belgian electricity system operator Elia, renewable electricity accounted for 29.8% of Belgium’s electricity generation in 2024, up from 28.2% in 2023, setting a new record. Solar accounted for 11.9% of Belgium’s electricity generation mix in 2024 with 8.3 TWh, compared to 7.2 TWh in 2023 (9.5%), offshore wind for 10% with 7 TWh (down from 10.5% and 8 TWh in 2023) and onshore wind for 7.9% with 5.5 TWh (down from 8.2% and 6.3 TWh in 2023).
Gas-fired generation fell to a record low of 12.3 TWh (17.6%) in 2024 (compared to 19.2 TWh and 25.2% in 2023), while nuclear power generation fell to 29.5 TWh (42.4%) in 2024, compared to 31.4 TWh (41.3%) in 2023. This marks the fourth consecutive decline of nuclear generation, ahead of its planned phase-out.
In addition, Belgium’s international trade reached record heights with more than 44.5 TWh traded in 2024, with net imports from France reaching 12.6 TWh. Moreover, average electricity prices fell by 28% (compared to 2023) but remained higher than before the gas crisis.
