Renewables accounted for 62% of Portugal's power mix in 2014

According to preliminary figures released by the Portuguese energy network operator REN, electricity consumption declined by 0.7% in 2014; corrected for the effect of temperature and the number of business days, electricity consumption remained stable over the year, remaining 6.5% below the 2010 maximum. Gas consumption also declined in 2014, by 5.4% (-5.4% in the conventional market and -5.5% in the power generation market), and remained 22% below its 2010 maximum.

Power generation benefited from exceptional meteorological conditions and renewables accounted for 62% of the power consumption: hydropower generation rose by 10% to reach 31% of power consumption, while wind power generation increased by 0.5% reaching 24% of total power consumption; biomass and solar PV (+33% in solar generation in 2014) accounted for 5.5% and 1.2%, respectively, in 2014. Thermal power generation accounted for 36% of electricity consumption in 2014 (23% for coal and 13% for gas). The remaining 2% came from imports.
