Renewables account for 53.6% of Spain’s electricity generation

Spain’s national electricity demand increased by 2.4% in August compared with the same month in 2025, after adjusting for temperature and working-day effects. In unadjusted terms, demand amounted to 23,137 GWh, representing a 3.7% year-on-year increase. Based on the data available to date, self-consumption facilities are estimated to have produced approximately 1,600 GWh over the month (Spain’s grid operator Red Electrica press release, 03/09/2026).

During the first eight months of 2026, total electricity demand in Spain reached 175,858 GWh, up 2.8% year-on-year, or 1.7% when adjusted for temperature and working-day effects.

Renewable sources also strengthened their contribution to Spain’s power generation mix, rising by 11% in August compared with August 2025 to 13,640 GWh. Renewables therefore accounted for 53.6% of total electricity generation.

“Solar photovoltaic leads generation for the fifth consecutive month with 29.2%, a share achieved by increasing its generation by 27.5%, to 7,445 GWh. This technology has exceeded its maximum daily production figure on August 5, when it reached 281.2 GWh” according to the press release.

Combined-cycle gas represented the second-largest source in August’s generation mix, with a 20.7% share, followed by nuclear at 18.6%wind at 13.3% and hydropower at 6.9%. Overall, 72.2% of electricity generation was carbon-free during the month, corresponding to an 8.2% increase in the volume of GWh generated without emissions. When output from self-consumption facilities is included, renewables are estimated to have represented 55.1% of Spain’s electricity mix in August.

“In order to promote greater use of renewable generation, a total of 954 GWh were integrated into the grid in August through battery storage and hydraulic pumping”, added the statement.

According to our data, most of the increase in power generation since 2020 comes from solar and wind, whose shares in the power mix have surged to 22% and 20%, respectively as of end 2025 (+19 pp and +5 pp, respectively, since 2010), coming close to the share of gas (21% in 2025, -11 pp since 2010). In addition, the country’s NECP plans to reach a total capacity of 214 GW by 2030, of which almost 75% (160 GW) should come from renewables, increasing the previous 71% target (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
