Renewable energies covered 17.1% of Estonia's power consumption in 2018

According to the latest data issued by Estonia's national electricity and gas transmission system operator (TSO) Elering, renewable energies covered 17.1% of the total electricity consumption in 2018, which is approximately the same amount as in 2017. This is more than the governmental interim objective of 16.1% in 2018 and in line with Estonia's aim to increase the share of renewable energy to 17.6% of the total domestic consumption by 2020.

1,662 GWh of electricity from renewable energies were produced in the country, a level similar to 2017. More specifically, biomass, biogas and waste accounted for 62% (1,040 GWh, +14.5% compared with 2017) of the total renewable power generation, while wind energy made up 36% (590 GWh, -12% on 2017). However, the quantity of subsidised renewable energy grew by 9% in 2018, to 1,587 GWh and financial support to renewable and high-efficiency CHP generation rose by 6% to €83m in 2018.
