The Spanish transmission system operator (TSO) Red Eléctrica has started exclusive negotiation talks with the Italian cable systems group Prysmian Group for the development of the Peninsula - Baleares 2 interconnection in Spain. The Letter of Award (LoA) received by Prysmian opens the negotiations on the contract to design, install, test, and commission two High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) 250 kV MI single-core cables to connect the island of Mallorca with the Spanish mainland power grid. The company expects to sign the over €0.5bn deal by the end of 2024.
Prysmian had previously been awarded projects by Red Electrica, including the Ibiza-Formentera, Lanzarote-Fuerteventura, Tenerife –La Gomera and Ceuta-Peninsula connections in recent years. At the end of 2023, Spain had 45 176 km of transmission lines (22 013 km of 400 kV transmission grid, 20 189 km of 220 kV, and 2 974 km of 132 kV).
