Windlab has secured the environmental approval for its 1.4 GW Wongalee wind project in Queensland, Australia (Windlab press release, 25/09/2026). The approval was granted under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), and it represents a major step towards the project’s financial close.
Wongalee is planned for development on the Yirendali Country in the Flinders Shireabout 300 km south-west of Townsville, as part of the North Queensland Super Hub. The location of the project is expected to provide access to the regions wind resources and it is expected to benefit from the CopperString transmission line planned to connect North West Queensland with the National Electricity Market.
Additionally, the 1.4 GW Bungaban wind project has also received its environmental approval and is now set to begin construction works in 2027 (Renew Economy, 25/09/2026). The project represents one of several renewable projects contracted by Rio Tinto to replace the electricity produced by the ageing Gladstone coal-fired power plant. The project is planned for connection to an 80 km transmission line planned by Powerlink, which should also allow the inclusion of a 500 MW Bungaban solar and battery hybrid project.
