QatarEnergy has announced plans to develop a new solar project, which will have a production capacity of 2 GW and will be built in the Dukhan area, approximately 80 km west of Doha, Qatar’s capital city. The new power plant will help Qatar reach its goal, unveiled in May 2024, to reach an overall solar capacity of 4 GW by 2030.
The new solar project will be added to QatarEnergy’s solar power portfolio, which includes the existing 800 MW Al-Kharsaah solar power plant inaugurated in 2022, and to two solar power projects that the company is building in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, with a total capacity of 875 MW, and which are expected to start production before the end of 2024.
As of end-2023, Qatar had about 805 MW of installed solar capacity but solar power generation remained marginal and the entirety of the country’s power generation still originated from gas-fired power plants.
