QatarEnergy starts 7.2 Mt/year LNG operations at Grain terminal in UK

QatarEnergy has announced the start of LNG delivery, storage, and regasification operations at the Isle of Grain terminal in the United Kingdom, operated by National Grid (Qatar Energy's press release, 20/10/2025).

The company noted that up to 7.2 Mt/year of LNG capacity will be utilized under a long-term agreement signed in October 2020. The first LNG cargo under this agreement was successfully unloaded at the terminal on 15 July 2025, officially marking the start of the 25-year contract term.

  • The Isle of Grain terminal currently provides a regasification capacity of 21.7 bcm/year and storage capacity of 1 mcm.
  • An ongoing expansion project will add 5.3 bcm of regasification capacity and 200,000 cubic meters of additional storage, enabling the terminal to meet up to one-third of the UK’s gas demand once completed.

Grain LNG’s customer base includes Centrica, QatarEnergy, TotalEnergies, Venture Global, Sonatrach, Shell, and Uniper. The terminal is fully contracted through 2029, over 70% contracted through 2038, and more than 50% contracted through 2045.
