QatarEnergy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector, with a particular focus on the supply of LNG from QatarEnergy to Egypt (Qatar News Agency, 04/01/2026).
According to the Qatari national press agency, “the MoU paves the way for ongoing cooperation in the energy sector, including the long-term delivery of LNG from QatarEnergy to Egypt. Under this agreement, QatarEnergy and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) will supply up to 24 LNG cargoes during the summer of 2026.” QatarEnergy and EGAS have also agreed to initiate discussions on additional long-term LNG supplies from QatarEnergy to Egypt.
Egypt’s domestic gas production has declined sharply, falling from a peak of 71 bcm in 2021 to 45 bcm in 2024, representing an average annual decrease of 14%. This decline is primarily due to reduced output from the country’s Zohr gas field, Egypt’s largest. Consequently, Egypt became a net gas importer in 2023, with imports rising to 13 bcm in 2024, twice the previous year’s level (net imports of 12 bcm in 2024, up from 2.2 bcm in 2023).
