QatarEnergy awards EPC contract for its 875 MW solar project in Qatar

Qatar’s state-owned petroleum company QatarEnergy has announced that its subsidiary QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions has awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for its 875 MW Industrial Cities (IC) solar power project to South Korea’s Samsung C&T.

The QAR2.3bn (US$632m) IC solar project consists of two large-scale PV solar power plants whose generation capacity will be distributed between the two main industrial cities in Qatar, namely Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC) and Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC). MIC will have a 417 MW plant and RLIC will have a 458 MW plant. Electricity production at the plants is supposed to begin in 2024.

The IC solar project is Qatar’s second utility-scale solar project after the 800 MW Al Kharsaa Solar PV Independent Power Plant, which is currently under construction.

Overall, the IC solar project is expected to increase Qatar’s solar energy capacity to 1.675 GW, as the country is targeting 5 GW of solar generated power by 2035. At the end of 2021, Qatar’s solar capacity was still negligible with only 5 MW installed.
