Qatar Petroleum has signed a long-term Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), under the terms of which Qatar Petroleum will supply up to 3 Mt/year (4.1 bcm/year) of LNG to Kuwait’s new LNG import and regasification terminal at Al-Zour Port over a 15-year period starting in 2022. LNG deliveries are expected to help meet Kuwait's rising energy demand, especially in the power generation sector. Kuwait already imports LNG from Qatar, under a 4-year agreement signed in March 2016 for 0.5 Mt/year of LNG over the 2016-2020 period.
In November 2019, Qatar Petroleum announced plans to boost its gas liquefaction capacity by more than 60% by 2027. The group, which is already the largest LNG producer worldwide, thanks to 14 liquefaction trains with a cumulated capacity of 77 Mt/year (104 bcm/year), has started to build two additional LNG trains, with a combined capacity of 16 Mt/year (21.6 bcm/year). As a result, Qatar’s LNG production and exporting capacity will increase from the current 77 Mt/year (104 bcm/year) to 126 Mt/year by 2027 (170 bcm/year).
