Qatar's oil and gas company Qatar Petroleum has taken the final investment decision (FID) to develop the North Field East (NFE) LNG project in Qatar. The US$28.75bn project will raise the country’s LNG production capacity from 77 Mt/year to 110 Mt/year (+43%). Qatar Petroleum has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to CTJV, a joint venture of Chiyoda Corporation and Technip Energies, to build 4 LNG trains, each with a capacity of 8 Mt/year, and associated utility facilities, including a large carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility. The new facilities will receive around 62 bcm/year of feed gas from the Eastern sector of Qatar’s North Field. Production is scheduled to start by end-2025 and to reach full capacity in late 2026 or early 2027.
In a second phase expected in 2027 at the earliest, Qatar Petroleum could develop the North Field South Project (NFS), which would add two 8 Mt/year liquefaction trains and further increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 110 Mt/year to 126 Mt/year.
