PT PLN plans to develop 31.6 GW of renewable capacities in Indonesia

Indonesia's state-owned electricity group PT PLN plans to develop around 31.6 GW of renewable energy capacity between 2024-2033, representing 75% of the expected additional generation for the period. The group's next Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), currently being prepared in association with the Indonesian government, increases the targets proposed in their 2021-2030 plan from 20.9 GW of renewable energies to 31.6 GW, with 8.6 GW already built as of September 2023. PLN also plans to build a new transmission line and a smart grid to connect hydropower and other renewable energy sources to zones with high or rising energy demand such as Java and Sulawesi.

Indonesia aims to develop CO2-free plants with a capacity of 587 GW by 2060 to reach carbon neutrality. The country needs an investment of at least US$1,777bn to reach these objectives, including US$1,042bn for renewables and US$135bn for the transmission network.
