Prysmian wins €250m contracts for submarine power interconnections in Spain

Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian Group has won two contracts from Red Eléctrica, the Spanish power transmission system operator, for the development of two submarine power interconnections that will link the Spanish mainland to Ceuta (North Africa) and the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera (Canary Islands). The projects, totalling €250m, are expected to be commissioned in 2025.

For the Spain-Ceuta interconnection, Prysmian will deliver a 132 kV high voltage alternating current (HVAC) double circuit through the Strait of Gibraltar, with maximum depths of 900 m. For the Tenerife-La Gomera interconnection, the company will deliver a 66 kV HVAC double circuit, with a record maximum depth of nearly 1.2 km.

In March 2022, Prysmian was awarded a €1.2bn contract by the NeuConnect consortium for the construction of a 725 km-long, 1.4 GW submarine interconnector project between the United Kingdom and Germany.  In October 2021, Prysmian was awarded a €221m contract for a 500 kV HVDC submarine and land cable system that would connect the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries with the African continent.
