The Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian has been awarded a €1.2bn contract by the NeuConnect consortium for the construction of a 725 km-long submarine interconnector project between the United Kingdom and Germany. The 1,400 MW submarine and land cable will be the first direct link between the UK and German electricity networks, stretching between the Isle of Grain in Kent (UK), passing through UK, Dutch and German waters to a converter station near Wilhelmshaven in Lower Saxony (Germany). Construction of the 525 kV HVDC line should start in 2022.
NeuConnect is a privately funded £1.4bn (€1.6bn) interconnection project, developed by a consortium of Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners and Kansai Electric Power, with the support of Greenage Power and Frontier Power.
