The Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian Group has completed the installation of the 135 km land cable section for the 1.4 GW Viking Link power interconnector, which will link the Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire (United Kingdom) and the Revsing substation in southern Jutland (Denmark).
Once completed, the 525 kV, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) Viking Link interconnector will consist of approximately 1,400 km of cables, including 1,250 km of subsea cables. The commissioning of the project is expected during the course of 2023. The link will allow the exchange of energy surplus between Great Britain and Denmark, as well as allow renewable energy access for over 1.4 million households.
The €670m design, manufacturing and installation contract for the cable system was awarded to Prysmian Group in August 2019 by the UK and Danish Transmission System Operators, National Grid and Energinet.
