Provaris seeks approval for a 2.8 GW green hydrogen project in Australia

Provaris Energy has submitted an Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) referral with the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water for a proposed 2.8 GW green hydrogen project located on the Tiwi Islands, in Australia’s Northern Territory. The Tiwi H2 project comprises the proposed development of a 100,000 t/year green hydrogen production facility for export to the Asia-Pacific region. The hydrogen will be produced by electrolysis of purified sea water powered by solar energy. A design concept study was completed in August 2022, confirming the project’s technical feasibility for an integrated compressed hydrogen production and export project. Construction should begin in 2024 and first hydrogen production and export is expected for 2027, for an assumed 30-year project life. The project secured Major Project Status by the government of Northern Territory in August 2022.
