The Philippine infrastructure company Prime Infra plans to develop a solar power facility with a capacity of 2.5 GW to 3.5 GW, alongside a 4-4.5 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), aimed at boosting renewable energy supply in the Philippines. The project will be undertaken by Terra Renewables (Terra Solar), a subsidiary of Prime Infra, in partnership with the company Solar Philippines Power Project. Terra Solar will supply 850 MW to Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), the country’s largest power utility. The project’s further details, namely cost or time schedule, have not yet been communicated.
Prime Infra’s project would be a significant leap forward in terms of renewables for the Philippines, as solar installed capacity reached a total of 1.3 GW in 2021. The Filipino government aims to increase the share of renewables in the power mix from 21% in 2020 to 35% by 2030, and 50% by 2040. The country is still very dependent on coal, as it still accounted for 57% of power generation in 2020.
Prime Infra also recently announced that it will acquire a controlling stake in the Malampaya deep-water gas project that produces over 12 mcm/d of gas and supplies gas to 3 power plants (2.7 GW) generating enough power to meet 20% of the Philippines' electricity needs.
