Primary energy consumption stable in France in 2013

According to statistics released by the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, primary energy production (excluding thermal renewable energy and wastes) was slightly above 2012 level in France in 2013, due to a significant increase in wind and hydropower generation (respectively +6% and +17%) that offset a slight decline in nuclear generation (-0.3%). Power generation increased by 1.5% during the year and power consumption by 0.9%. Adjusted for weather conditions, primary energy consumption remained stable in 2013 and the rate of energy independence was stable compared to 2012 at 48.4%. Energy-related CO2 emissions increased by 1.1% in 2013, as coal consumption rose by 7.6% (especially in the power sector), while coal product consumption eroded at a slower pace than in 2012 (-0.9% in 2013). Gas consumption increased by 1.4%; in 2013, LNG imports accounted for 18% of net imports, which is 5 percentage points below their 2012 level.
