Public Power Corp. (PPC), the Greece state-owned power utility, has released its 2020-2024 business plan that includes the phase out of 3.4 GW of lignite-fired capacity by the end of 2023. The plan details the schedules of the plants closure, namely Amyntaio 1&2 (300 MW each) in 2020, the Kardia 3&4 (325 MW each) in 2021, the Megalopolis 3 (300 MW), Dimitrios 1&4 (300 MW each) in 2022, and the Megalopolis 4 (300 MW), Meliti 1 (330 MW) and Dimitrios 5 (365 MW) in 2023. Furthermore, once the Ptolemais 5 coal-fired power plant is connected to the grid in 2022 it will be converted to a different fuel from 2028 onwards.
As part of its plan, PPC also ambitions to increase its RES installed capacity by 1 GW by 2024. At the end of 2018, the total wind capacity in Greece stood at 2,800 MW while thermal power plants accounted for 53% of the power mix at 10 GW (3.7 GW of coal, 3.9 GW of gas and 2.5 GW of oil).
