Powergrid will build an 800 kV power transmission line in India

Indian state-owned power transmission grid company PowerGrid has awarded ABB a US$640m contract for the delivery of an 800 kV ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) line, which will stretch over 1,830 km to connect Raigarh in Central India to Pugalur in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The line will have a transmission capacity of 6,000 MW, enough to meet the electricity needs of over 80 million people. The two-way link will integrate thermal and wind energy for transmission of power to high consumption centers. The project will be carried out in partnership with Indian manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), which will receive US$200m. The project is expected to be completed in 2019.
