PowerChina inks an EPC deal for the 500 MW Wawa project (Philippines)

Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) has inked a deal regarding the 500 MW Wawa hydro plant project in the Rizal province, Philippines, which is expected to provide low cost electricity for the Manila area.



The Wawa power station is worth US$1bn. It will a pumped storage plant (PSP) facility and is currently being developed by San Lorenzo Ruiz Builders (SLRB) and Developers (SLRB) and Equis Energy. PowerChina will be in charge of the design, procurement and construction (EPC) of the project, which is expected to break ground by the end of 2017, while the commissioning is planned for early 2022.



The project fits into Philippines' strategy aiming to triple the domestic renewable energy generation capacity (including hydropower) by 2030.



Equis Energy is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) based in the Asia-Pacific region which owns 97 renewable energy assets in operation reaching 4.4 GW across India, Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand. The company also plans to commission 6.7 GW of new projects in the years to come.
