The Chinese company PowerChina has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build the 1.1 GW Suez wind project, located near Ras Ghareb and Ras Shokeir, in Egypt's Red Sea Governorate. The deal was signed with Suez Wind Energy, a joint venture of the Saudi developer ACWA Power and its consortium partner HAU Energy.
Earlier in January 2025, ACWA Power achieved financial close for the US$1.2bn project. The power plant, which is expected to generate around 4.3 TWh/year and offset emissions by 2.2 MtCO2/year, will be implemented in two phases with a capacity of 550 MW each, for a total of 138 turbines provided by China’s Envision Energy. The project is expected to achieve full commercial operations by 2027.
This is PowerChina’s second wind power project in Egypt executed under an EPC contract, following a 500 MW project, also located near Ras Ghareb, awarded to PowerChina in 2022.
At the end of 2023, wind represented about 3% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.6 GW and 2.8% of its power generation with 6.7 TWh.
