Germany’s Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has published electricity market data for 2023, which shows that the share of electricity generated from renewables reached 55% in 2023 (compared to 48% in 2022). Wind accounted for 31.1%, solar for 12.1%, biomass for more than 8.4%, while the reaming 3.4% came from hydropower and other renewables.
Overall, power generation from renewables in 2023 surpassed 251 TWh (+7.5% compared to 2022), with wind accounting for nearly 119 TWh (+18%), including nearly 24 TWh from offshore wind. Solar accounted for about 55 TWh (steady compared to 2022).
Power generation from conventional energy sources reached about 197 TWh, a 24% decrease compared to 2022. Coal-fired and lignite-fired power generation decreased by 37% and 25%, respectively, in 2023. Gas-fired generation increased by more than 31% in 2023.
In addition, the average day-ahead wholesale electricity price reached €95.18/MWh in 2023, a sharp decreased compared to 2022 when it reached €235.45/MWh. As for foreign power trade, Germany imported a total of 54.1 TWh (33.2 TWh in 2022) and exported 42.4 TWh (56.3 TWh in 2022) in 2023. Compared to 2022, imports increased by around 63% and exports fell by nearly 25%.
