Portugal's EDP generated 45% of its power from wind in 2019

In 2019, the Portuguese energy group EDP posted a 2% decrease in its installed capacity to 26,681 MW, due to the sale of a 51% stake in 997 MW worhth of operating power assets in Europe (388 MW in France, 348 MW in Spain, 191 MW in Portugal and 71 MW in Belgium). Installed wind power capacity fell by 871 MW in Europe but increased by 382 MW in North America, and accounted for 40% of EDP's installed capacity; hydropower capacity covered another 33%, followed by gas (14%), coal (12%), and solar (less than 1%). Power generation fell by 7% compared to 2018 levels reaching 66.7 TWh due to a lower hydropower generation (-27% in the Iberian peninsula and -26% in Brazil), which accounted for 21% of EDP's power mix. Wind power generation grew by 6% to 45% of EDP's power generation. Coal-fired power generation collapsed (-38%, especially in Iberia, where it fell by 49%), while gas-fired generation nearly doubled (+91%).

In 2019, EDP distributed 58 TWh (-2.5% compared to 2018 levels) to 6.9 million customers in the Iberian peninsula (nearly 50 TWh to 6.2 million customers in Portugal and 8.3 TWh to 668,000 customers in Spain). The group also supplied 30 TWh of electricity in Portugal and Spain (18 TWh and 12 TWh, respectively) and 19 TWh of gas (15 TWh in Spain and 3.8 TWh in Portugal). In addition, it distributed 25.6 TWh of power to 3.5 million customers in Brazil.

In 2019, the group registered €2,258m in capital expenditures (+11% compared to 2018 levels), mainly for expansion (€1,724m) including €1,121m in renewables (-14%) and €585m in networks.
