Portugal's national energy grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) has announced that the country's renewable power generation reached 36.7 TWh, enough to meet 71% of the national electricity demand in 2024. The clean energies that contributed the most to the overall demand were hydropower (28%) and wind (27%), followed by solar (10%) and biomass (6%); hydropower generation rose by 24% during the year and solar PV generation by 37%. Thermal production and imported energy contributed with 10% and 20% of the country’s energy demand, respectively, with imports recording their highest ever recorded level in the national electricity system. REN also estimates that the country’s electricity consumption grew by 1.3% to 51.4 TWh (by about 2% when adjusted for the effects of temperature and the number of working days).
Where gas is concerned, gas consumption fell by 17% to 40.5 TWh, its lowest level since 2003, mainly due to a 56% decrease in demand from the power sector. Gas consumption grew in other sectors (+2%), after four years of decline.
