The Portuguese Government has approved investments totalling €611m to extend and develop the National Transmission Network (RNT) by Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), the Portuguese electricity and natural gas transmission company.
Among the approved projects are the creation of grid connection capacity in the Sines High Demand Area, the reinforcement to integrate the Pisão solar PV project to the national grid, the development of the grid in the Northeast of mainland Portugal (to integrate renewable energy projects and the establishment of very high voltage infrastructure in the area), and the transformation of the Frades and Penela substations.
According to REN’s Development and investment Plan for the National Transport Network (PDIRT) 2022-2031, power consumption is expected to increase between 0.7%/year and 1.8%/year on average to reach 57 TWh in 2031, with renewable capacity increasing to 23 GW by the same year.
