Port Kembla selected as new site for LNG import terminal (Australia)

A consortium including the Japanese power company JERA (the joint venture of TEPCO and Chubu Electric) and Marubeni Corporation has selected the site of Port Kembla (south of Sydney) in New South Wales (Australia) for the construction of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal. The LNG project would supply gas to local industries in New South Wales. The construction is expected require a capital investment of AUD200m-AUD300m (US$150m-US$230m) and once built, the facility could cover 70% of NSW's gas requirements.

The facility is Australia's second LNG regasification terminal project. Although the country is the world's second largest LNG exported, it is struggling with a domestic supply gap due to restriction on exploration and production projects. In June 2018, the Australian energy company AGL Energy announced that it would make a final investment decision (FID) on the 2.6 Mt/year Crib Point LNG import terminal project worth AUD250m (US$189m) in 2019.
