Polish NABE will acquire 23.5 GW coal plants from utilities

Four Polish power utilities, including PGE, Tauron, Enea and Energa, have signed memorandums of understanding specifying the key conditions for the sale of their coal assets, including 13 plants with a total capacity of 23.5 GW, to the country’s Ministry of State Assets. Coal assets will be handed over to the National Energy Security Agency (NABE), a state agency, which will own and operate existing coal-fired power plants and lignite mines in Poland. The process, which requires approval from the European Commission, is expected to be completed by end-2023.

NABE will become the largest producer of electricity in Poland, responsible for around 70% of power generation. The agency will not invest in the expansion of power plants, focusing on modernisation and renovation of the existing ones. The creation of NABE is expected to facilitate investments in transforming the Polish energy sector by allowing PGE, Tauron, Enea, and Energa to secure funds more easily, focusing on solar, gas, and nuclear power plants, enhancing electricity and heat storage capabilities, and expanding the distribution system.
