Polish companies plan a 750 MW CCGT project in Ostrołęka (Poland)

The Polish oil refiner and retailer PKN Orlen (27.5% state-owned) has signed a letter of intent with Poland’s oil and gas company PGNiG to build a 750 MW CCGT unit at the Ostrołęka power plant. The project is expected to be operational by 2024. In addition, the two companies will conduct analyzes and development works to enable the construction of an unspecified number of creation of biogas plants by the end of 2025.

PKN Orlen took over the state-run electric utility Energa in May 2020. Energa was planning on developing the 1,000 MW Ostrołęka C coal-fired power plant, which would be the last coal-fired project to be built in Poland. Energa and ENEA dropped financing for the project in February 2020.

In 2017 China Power Engineering Consulting Group was selected for the development of the project in a competitive tender. The PLN 4.5bn (US$1.16bn) project was expected to be operational by mid-2023. The construction of the power plant had already started although full financing hadn't yet been secured.
