Polish coal producer JSW seeks to grow its output through acquisitions

Polish coking coal producer JSW (Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa) has unveiled plans to increase its output by 2.5 Mt/year to 3 Mt/year through acquisitions. Its 2030 production target has been set at 18 Mt/year, much above the current 14.8 Mt/year (including all types of coal). However, the share of thermal coal in its production will dwindle from the current 25% to 10%. The group will focus on coking coal, betting on the rising needs of the European steel industry.

JSW is considering to bid for the control of Australia's coal miner Prairie Mining, which owns coking coal assets next to its mines. It is also seeking to develop technology with Chinese partners in order to be eligible for fundings from Chinese banks.

JSW is the European leading producer of high-quality hard (type 35) coking coal and a major producer of coke. The company produced 10.7 Mt of coking coal and 4.1 Mt of coal in 2017. It owns four polish mines producing coking coal and steam coal: Borynia-Zofiówka-Jastrzębie, Budryk, Knurów-Szczygłowice and Pniówek, and Zakład Wsparcia Produkcji.
