Poland’s PGE and ZE PAK form JV to develop the 2.8 GW Pątnów nuclear plant

The Polish companies ZE PAK and Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) have established a 50:50 joint venture named PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa to implement the project to build a 2.8 GW nuclear power plant in Pątnów, central Poland. The Pątnów plant will comprise two APR1400 reactors supplied by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP). The cost of the nuclear plant is estimated at PLN100bn (€21.5bn).

In October 2022, ZE PAK and PGE signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with KHNP to work on Poland’s second nuclear plant in Pątnów, only days after Warsaw selected the US energy company Westinghouse to build the country’s first nuclear power plant in Choczewo (northern Poland), which will initially host three AP1000 reactors. Westinghouse is expected to start construction of the first plant in 2026.

To reduce its dependency on coal, which accounted for 70% of the country’s power mix in 2021, Poland aims to build four to six nuclear reactors between 2026 and the mid-2040s, for a total capacity of 6 to 9 GW. Earlier in April 2023, The Polish Ministry of Climate unveiled the new scenario of the "Energy Policy of Poland until 2040" under which zero-emissions sources (renewables and nuclear) should account for 74% of the installed capacity and cover around 73% of Poland's electricity demand by 2040.
