Poland's first nuclear project secures environmental clearance

The Polish General Directorate for Environmental Protection (GDOS) has issued a environmental permit for the country’s first nuclear power plant at the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in Pomerania, considering that the construction and operation of the project will not adversily alter the environment, and its impact will be monitored. In addition, Westinghouse Electric Company and Bechtel have signed a formal agreement to partner on the design and construction of the project. Construction should start in 2026 and could be completed in 2033.

The Polish government selected the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor technology for its first-ever nuclear energy program in November 2022. The Polish Energy Policy until 2040 foresees the construction of 6-9 GW nuclear capacity.
