Poland has unveiled its latest draft of its national energy and climate plan (NECP). The plan proposes a PLN792bn (€185bn) investment to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% by 2030, targeting a 56% share of renewable power in its electricity mix by the same year. The plan is still subject to approval by Poland’s cabinet, where it can be modified but not blocked before its presentation to the European Commission.
In March 2024, Poland presented a draft of its updated NECP where the country aimed to achieve 29.8% of renewables in its final energy consumption (including 50% in its electricity consumption and 32% in its heating and cooling consumption) and to reduce by 14% the GHG emissions for the sectors covered by the Effort Sharing Regulation (ESD, non-ETS) for 2030 compared to 2005 levels. In May 2024, after assessing the updated draft NECP, the European Commission recommended to Poland to raise its ambitions in line with the agreed EU targets for 2030.
