Poland starts environmental approval for its first nuclear power plant

Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ), the Polish state-owned company that aims to deploy up to six reactors at multiple sites in Poland by 2040, has submitted the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report for the first nuclear project in Poland, seeking environmental approval to build and operate up to 3750 MWe of nuclear capacity in the area of the municipalities of Choczewo, Gniewino and Korkowa in the province of Pomerania. Two location variants of the plant are proposed: firstly Lubiatowo-Kopalino in the Choczewo commune and secondly Żarnowiec in the territory of the Krokowa and Gniewino communes. Both locations were identified in 2014.

Poland's energy policy until 2040 considers the development of a nuclear power plant (1-1.6 GW) that could start commercial operations in 2033. Five additional nuclear power plants could be launched every two years by 2043; nuclear could cover 10% of the power mix in 2035.
