The Polish government has approved a draft legislation banning imports of Russian coal. Detailed plans on how to eliminate Russian energy supplies will be announced soon. Most of Poland's coal imports in 2020 came from Russia (73%), followed by Czechia (21%). Russia also accounts for around 50% of Poland's gas imports and 60% of its crude oil imports.
Production of coal and lignite fell by 30% between 2012 and 2020, from 144 Mt to 101 Mt (54% bituminous coal and 46% lignite), including -10% in 2020. Exports declined from 18 Mt in 2013 to 11 Mt in 2020, while imports increased from 10.9 Mt in 2012 to 17 Mt in 2019 (26% decrease to less than 13 Mt in 2020). Poland has been a net importer of coal and lignite since 2018 (1.5 Mt of net imports in 2020).
