Poland give first approval to two nuclear plant projects

The Polish Minister of Climate and Environment has formally greenlighted the country’s first nuclear plant project, issuing a decision which confirms that the investment is line with public interest and the policy pursued by the government. This document entitles Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) to apply for further administrative decisions, e.g. location and subsequent building permit. In November 2022, the Council of Ministers  approved a resolution indicating the need to build a nuclear power plant with a capacity of up to 3,750 MWe in the Choczewo or Gniewino and Krokowa communes, based on the AP1000 reactor technology (United States). The Polish Energy Policy until 2040 foresees the construction of 6-9 GW nuclear capacity.

In addition, the copper mining group KGHM also secured a similar decision enabling the construction of a modular nuclear power plant with a capacity of 462 MW consisting of six small modular reactor (SMR), each with a capacity of 77 MW. The company signed an agreement with NuScale Power (United States) for preliminary work.
